ST. PAUL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team used a two-goal second period and then a late goal from first year
Ava Stinnett to beat Hamline for the first time since Feb. 5, 2015 Wednesday evening in St. Paul.
Stinnett's goal with just over eight minutes left to play lifted the Bennies to a 3-2 nonconference win over the Pipers on Hamline's home ice in TRIA Rink. The win also marked CSB's first over Hamline in St. Paul since February 2014.
After a quiet first period – the two teams combined for 11 shots on net with the Bennies (6-7) outshooting Hamline by a margin of 9-2 – CSB scored a pair of goals to go up 2-0. Senior
Zoe Culshaw-Klein put the Bennies up 1-0 at the 6:25 mark of the second off assists from
Isabelle Heim and
Sami Boerboom, and
Brynn Sexauer scored in the 14
th minute to make it a 2-0 game. Heim added a second assist on the day and Culshaw-Klein also assisted on the goal.
Hamline (7-6) pulled itself back in the game with a goal in the 15
th minute of the second period and another at the 4:39 mark of the third, but the Bennies weren't done yet. Stinnett scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season at the 11:59 mark of the third to give CSB a one-goal lead it wouldn't give up. First year
Jenna Timm assisted on the goal.
The Pipers pulled their goalie for the final minute and a half of the game, but were only able to get a few shots on net and first year goalie
Kate Moffat stopped them all to help her team hold on for the win.
Moffat stopped 24 shots – including 13 in the third period – to pick up the second win of her collegiate career. CSB finished the game outshooting Hamline 28-26, and Stinnett led the team with five shots on net.
CSB returns to action and gets back into MIAC play Friday, Jan. 28, when it hosts St. Kate's at 7 p.m. at the MAC in St. Cloud.
