ST. CLOUD, Minn. – For the first two periods of play Friday night, the shots just weren't hitting their mark for the College of Saint Benedict hockey team.
But when things started clicking for the Bennies, they happened fast.
Down 2-0 after two despite outshooting St. Kate's 31-10, CSB scored three goals in seven minutes – including two in a two-minute span – and then
Addy Hackley scored the game-winner in overtime to lift CSB to a 4-3, nonconference win over the Wildcats.
The win marked the fifth of the season for Saint Benedict, which is now 5-6 overall. The game marked the first for both CSB and St. Kate's (5-8) since mid-December.
It was the Wildcats who got on the board first in the ninth minute of the first period when Sophia Gorski took a shot and then knocked the rebound into the back of the net. St. Kate's made it 2-0 a minute into the seventh, and that lead held the remainder of the second and into the third period.
Sophomore Corrina Brown finally got CSB on the board at the 6:04 mark of the final period with a shot from just to the left of the Wildcats' goalie. Hackley tied the game with the first goal of her collegiate career at the 11:45 mark, and from there the race was on. Hackley's goal – an unassisted goal that came off a shot from just inside the blue line – marked the first of three in a one minute and 40 second span.
St. Kate's took a 3-2 lead at the 12:41 mark off another long shot that went over goalie
Maggie Gilchrist's left shoulder, but the Bennies tied the game again 40 seconds later when
Annika Brodt sent a high shot into the back of the Wildcats' net.
Julia Pias and
Jamie Benzie assisted on the goal, which came in transition as CSB's two defenders were looking to change.
The score stayed tied for the remainder of regulation, and St. Kate's put two early shots on Gilchrist to start the 3-on-3 overtime. After notching the first goal of her CSB career in the third, Hackley racked up her first game-winner in OT. She scored on another high shot at the 2:15 mark off an assist from
Jenna Timm to lift her team to the win.
CSB ended the game outshooting the Wildcats 47-16. Hackley finished with seven shots on net and
Zoe Culshaw-Klein and
Julia Pias both added six. Gilchrist finished with 13 saves in net to pick up her third win of the year.
The Bennies are scheduled to be back in action and back at home Friday, Jan. 21, when they host St. Scholastica at 7 p.m. at the MAC in St. Cloud.
