The College of Saint Benedict tennis team dropped a MIAC match to Gustavus Friday night in St. Peter.
The Bennies lost 9-0 to the Gusties, who are 9-0 overall and 2-0 in the MIAC. Saint Benedict is now 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the MIAC.
"Gustavus is a top team and played tough," head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "Even though the scores didn't end the way we wanted, I thought (Friday) we finally played CSB tennis. Win or lose, we need to play how we played (Friday), every night."
Maria Bedford and
Grace Lee gave the Gusties everything they had at No. 3 doubles, but came up just short in an 8-5 loss.
Kayla McIver and
Lily Fredericks lost 8-0 at No. 1 doubles, and
Peyton Kopel and
Jane Bodensteiner lost by the same score at No. 2 doubles.
Bodensteiner pushed her singles match as far as it would go at No. 4 singles, but eventually fell 7-6, 6-1 and 3-0 in the tiebreaker. McIver lost 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Fredericks lost 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Kopel also fell 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, Bedford lost 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Lee fell 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
CSB returns to action and competes outside at home for the first time since Fall 2019 on Saturday, April 10, when Saint Mary's comes to town. The match starts at noon at CSB's outdoor tennis courts. Fans are welcome - masked and socially distant - but must check in at the gate and must bring their own chairs.
