Bennies win pitcher’s duel in split with Oles

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The matchup of two of the top pitchers in the MIAC lived up to the hype Saturday afternoon in St. Joe.

CSB sophomore Elly Novak and St. Olaf senior Julie Graf combined to give up five hits, a single unearned run and 21 strikeouts, and the Bennies came away with the win after one Ole error in the first game of a MIAC doubleheader Saturday. CSB won the first game 1-0 and the Oles came away with a 5-2 win in the second game after another solid appearance on the mound for Graf.

The Bennies' 1-0 win in the first game marked the first MIAC loss of the season for St. Olaf. CSB is now 15-5 overall and 7-3 in the MIAC and the Oles are 11-3 overall and 9-1 in MIAC play.

Neither team had a hit in the first game until the third inning. Gabby Spencer tripled in the bottom of the inning, but was left stranded after a groundout. Jordyn Swoboda walked and Katie Carlson singled in the fourth, but that's as far as either runner got.

In the bottom of the fifth with two outs, Spencer lined a hit straight back to Graf and safely reached first. She stole second, stole third a few pitches later and then scored on a throwing error by the Oles. St. Olaf got a runner on thanks to a CSB error in the top of the seventh, but the Bennie defense left her stranded.

Spencer's two hits led CSB, which finished with three total hits. Novak allowed just two hits and struck out six batters to pick up her ninth win of the season. With her six strikeouts in Game 1 she pushed her season total to 101 strikeouts, marking just the 10th time in program history a pitcher has reached the 100-strikeout milestone in a season. She is just the sixth CSB pitcher to reach the season milestone. Graf recorded 15 strikeouts for the Oles.

CSB loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning of the second game but couldn't capitalize, and it was the Oles who scored first in the second thanks to a three-run home run. The Bennies got one run back in the third thanks to an RBI double from Katie Carlson, but St. Olaf tracked on two more runs in the fourth on a two-run double. CSB scored once more in the fifth on a solo homer from Tori Harren, but left the bases loaded again and failed to score.

Megan Rasmussen went 2-for-2 to pace CSB, which had six total hits and seven stolen bases. Ally Hjort took the loss after giving up five runs – four earned – on 10 hits. She struck out five batters.

The Bennies take the field again Sunday, April 18 when they take on Hamline starting at 1 p.m. in St. Paul.
