SARTELL, Minn. – After a close loss to St. Cloud State last weekend, the College of Saint Benedict tennis team got back on track Saturday with a sweep of Minnesota Morris. The Bennies improved their overall record to 2-2 with a 9-0 win against the Cougars at Sta-Fit in Sartell.
"(Saturday) was a good day," head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "The energy was there and we are playing the tennis we want to play. It was a good match to get positive vibes going. It will be fun to carry some positive momentum into (Sunday's) MIAC match."
The Bennies started the afternoon with three wins in doubles play to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles.
Kayla McIver and
Lily Fredericks teamed up to win 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, and
Maria Bedford and
Grace Lee won by the same score at No. 3 doubles. The Cougars (3-1) put up a fight at No. 2 doubles, but first years
Peyton Kopel and
Jane Bodensteiner held on for the 8-6 win.
McIver kicked off singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, and Fredericks won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Kopel picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles, and Bodensteiner swept her opponent, winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Bedford won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, and Lee wrapped up the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.
CSB is back in action and returns to MIAC play Sunday, March 28, when it hosts St. Thomas at 6:30 p.m. at Sta-Fit. Last season, the Bennies snapped a nine-match losing streak to the Tommies thanks to a 6-3 win in Minneapolis.
