Bennie swim and dive wins six events at Gustavus

02/21/2021

ST. PETER, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict swimmers made the trek to St. Peter Sunday afternoon for a MIAC dual meet against Gustavus. Molly Johanson, Mikayla Von Wahlde, Ana Birklid and Fiona Rosko all won an individual event to lead the Bennies, who lost 197.5-99.5 to the Gusties.

The four swimming wins were on top of Emily Quill's sweep of the diving competition Saturday in Collegeville. The sweep marked the second straight for Quill, and recorded a season-best score of 409 on the one-meter, 11-dive competition. That score would be a national qualifying mark if the NCAA Championships hadn't been canceled, and puts her in consideration for All-American honors. She also won the three-meter, 11-dive competition with a score of 393.

Johanson's win came in the 400 IM, where she came in first with a time of 4:52.02. After tying for second in the 100 backstroke, Von Wahlde swam a season-best time of 2:11.50 in the 200 backstroke to come away with the win. She finished the 100 backstroke in 1:01.99. Rosko won the 200 breaststroke in 2:33.62, and Birklid took first in the 200 IM in 2:17.26.

Johanson, Roski and Birklid – along with Madison Slavik – were also part of the second-place 200 medley relay team. The foursome finished the race in 1:55.26.

As well as winning the 200 breaststroke, Rosko also finished second in the 200 fly in 2:19.14 and third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.94. Johanson took second behind Rosko in the 200 breaststroke in 2:35.65, and Birklid recorded a third-place finish in the 200 free in 2:02.37.

Jessica Milstroh also recorded a pair of top-three finishes Sunday, taking second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.87 and third in the 200 IM in 2:20.06. First year Emi Wagner took second in the 50 free in 26.18 seconds and Laura Jennings finished third in the 100 fly in 1:05.13.

Thea Oman, Milstroh, Slavik and Wagner teamed up to take third in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:44.23, and Lindsay Smutka, Wagner, Von Wahlde and Birklid finished third in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:48.12.

The Bennies' next scheduled meet is also their last. The team heads to St. Paul March 6-7 for the St. Kate's triangular, hosted by the Wildcats and including Hamline. All schedules are subject to change; stay tuned to www.gobennies.com for updates.
