CSB hockey dominant to wrap up weekend series with a win

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Friday night, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team dominated Concordia-Wisconsin on the score sheet, but came up just short on the scoreboard. Saturday afternoon, the Bennies made extra sure that didn't happen again.

For the second straight game, the Bennies dominated on offense, more than doubling up the Falcons in shots on net, and came away with a 3-2 win at the MAC in St. Cloud. The win marks the first of the season for CSB, which is 1-3 and gains some momentum heading into MIAC play this week.

Saint Benedict outshot the Falcons (2-1) 15-4 in the first period, but the CUW goalie stopped all 15 shots to keep the game scoreless. In the second period, it was the Falcons who struck first in the 10th minute, but their lead was short lived.

Sophomore Jamie Benzie got the Bennies on the board with her first goal of the season at 14:46 of the second, and 15 seconds later first year Aurora Opsahl scored her first collegiate goal to put Saint Benedict ahead 2-1.

Benzie was parked in front of the Falcons' net, and she was able to send the puck past their goalie over her left shoulder. Ava Stinnett and Corrine Brown assisted on the goal – Stinnett's third assist and fifth point so far this season. She has at least one point in all four of the team's games. Opsahl's goal 15 seconds later came on a shot just in front of Concordia's net off assists from Jenna Timm and Kennedy Morris.

That 2-1 lead held the remainder of the second period, and the Falcons tied the game in the eighth minute of the third, but Morris put her team ahead for good three minutes later. Morris notched her first multi-point game when she launched a rocket of a shot from the blue line to the left of the Falcons' net and sent the puck past their goalie. Opsahl and Annie Luzum assisted on the goal.

Concordia pulled its goal for the final two minutes of play, and Kendall Johnson nearly scored an empty net goal, but the puck hit the cross bar and dribbled to the side of the net. Even with the extra skater, the Falcons were unable to score the tying goal.

CSB ended the game outshooting Concordia 39-15. Addy Hackley and Morris both put five shots on net to lead the team and Zoe Culshaw-Klein added four. Senior goalie Maggie Gilchrist made 13 saves to pick up her first win of the season.

Saint Benedict opens MIAC play at home Thursday, Nov. 11, when it hosts Bethel at 7 p.m. at the MAC in ST. Cloud. The two teams play again at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, in St. Paul, to wrap up the season series.
