MOORHEAD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team clinched a spot in the 2021 MIAC Tournament Friday night with a sweep of St. Kate's, but was looking to go to Concordia and build some momentum for its postseason run Saturday afternoon.
The Cobbers, however, were looking to end their season on a high note – and did just that. Saint Benedict wrapped up the regular season with a 3-1 loss to Concordia Saturday in Moorhead. The Cobbers won 26-24, 14-25, 25-14 and 25-15. The Bennies will be the No. 6 seed in the league's postseason tournament, and travel to the No. 3 seed, which will be decided later Saturday evening. That game will be Wednesday at 7 p.m.
After Concordia (9-17, 2-9) jumped to an early lead in the first set, CSB (7-13, 5-6) went on a 5-0 run to take an 11-9 lead. The two teams battled back and forth until the Cobbers went on a 3-0 run to go up 24-22 late.
Olivia Thompson and
Audrey Spolidoro had kills to tie the set, but Concordia scored the final two points to take a 1-0 lead.
The Bennies jumped to a 7-3 lead early in the second set, and went on a 5-0 run midway through the set to go up 18-10. Thompson had a kill and
Emma Guest had a pair of service aces as part of the run. A 6-1 run made it 24-12, and a kill from
Gabby Heying ended the set in CSB's favor and tied the match 1-1.
The next two sets were all Concordia, however. The Bennies tallied just 16 kills in the final two sets combined as the Cobbers used big runs to pull away in both sets.
Grace Holm had 12 kills to pace the Bennies, who hit .079 and recorded 44 kills. Heying added 10 kills and Thompson finished with nine. Spolidoro had a new career-high with 40 assists and
Mary Wenisch had a team-best 26 digs.
Madelyn Gregory also had four total blocks on defense.
Kendra Wiggs paced Concordia with 13 kills. Mariah Iwen had 26 assists and Chloe Markovic had 25 digs. The Cobbers hit .200 and had 50 kills and 10 total blocks.
