Frantzick starts 2021 with career day in net

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Ally Frantzick set the tone early for her sophomore season in net with the College of Saint Benedict hockey team.

Frantzick had a career afternoon in the net Saturday, stopping 46 shots to keep the Bennies in the game in a 3-1 loss to a tough Hamline squad on the Pipers' home ice in St. Paul. The game marked the first in 343 days for Saint Benedict, while the Pipers kicked off the season with a 7-0 shutout of Concordia-Wisconsin Friday.

The first period was quiet Saturday afternoon as the two teams combined for 12 shots. Frantzick turned away all eight of Hamline's first-period shots.

Eight minutes into the second period, the Bennies killed off a penalty thanks to blocked shots from Rachel DeCesare and Morgan Newpower and a pair of saves from Frantzick. After winning a faceoff, the Pipers took control of the puck again, and after another blocked shot by Newpower and a save from Frantzick, Madison Davis got the rebounds and got Hamline on the board at the 9:09 mark.

Frantzick stopped 21 shots in the second period to keep it a one-goal game heading into the third and final period, but Hamline scored the eventual-game winner at the four-minute mark of the final period. Rylan Bistodeau scored the first goal of her senior season to get CSB on the board and make it a one-goal game again at the 10:18 mark off a pass from Myka Stave, but the Pipers sealed the win with one final goal at the 12:33 mark.

The Pipers outshot CSB 49-17. Frantzick's 46 saves were two better than her previous career-best of 44, recorded against Gustavus on Valentine's Day of 2020. Annika Brodt led the Bennies with six shots on net. Newpower had three blocked shots for CSB's defense to help keep the Pipers out of the net.

CSB is back in action Saturday, Feb. 6, when it heads to Bethel to start MIAC play against the Royals. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Arden Hills.
