ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – When the puck drops Saturday afternoon in St. Paul, it will have been just one month shy of a year since the College of Saint Benedict hockey team took the ice for a game.

The Bennies look to harness the energy and excitement that comes with finally hitting the ice again to pick up where they left off in 2019-20 and expand on that success in the shortened 2020-21 season.

CSB – which played its last game on Feb. 22, 2020, starts the 2021 season Saturday, Jan. 30, when it heads to St. Paul to take on Hamline in a nonconference game. The Bennies were originally scheduled to play St. Thomas Friday night, but that game was postponed due to COVID protocols. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m., and live video will be available courtesy of Hamline here.

Saint Benedict coming off its best season in nearly 20 years heading into Friday's game, and it takes the ice looking to snap an 11-game losing streak to the Pipers. Hamline, which has emerged as a MIAC women's hockey powerhouse in the past few years, swept the Bennies in 2019-20, winning 8-1 and 5-2.

CSB lost a trio of seniors from its 11-12-1 finish in 2019-20, but returns plenty of talent from a squad that won double-digit games for just the sixth time in program history. Annika Brodt is back to lead the team after finishing 13th in the MIAC in points (20) and assists (12) as a sophomore last season. Junior Julia Pias is also back after finishing second on the team with 11 assists and third with 14 points. Senior Rylan Bistodeau scored a career-best nine goals last season, and also chipped in with four assists to finish fourth on the team with 13 points.

Leading the way in net for the Bennies is sophomore Ally Frantzick, who earned All-MIAC Honorable Mention accolades as a first year. She finished fifth in the MIAC with 403 saves, including a career-best 44 saves on Feb. 14 against Gustavus. Senior Kailee Medved and junior Maggie Gilchrist will also be looking for time in net after combining for nearly 300 more saves last season. All three CSB goalies had a save percentage of .918 or better in 2019-20.

After taking on the Pipers Saturday, Saint Benedict kicks off MIAC play Saturday, Feb. 6, when it heads to Arden Hills for a 5 p.m. matchup with Bethel. The Bennies play at home for the first time in 2021 Saturday, Feb. 13, when they host Concordia at 7 p.m. at the MAC in St. Cloud.
