CSB falls to ENC to wrap up time in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team wrapped up the Florida portion of its spring break trip with a 4-3 loss to Eastern Nazarene College Wednesday morning. CSB finished 3-4 in Clermont, Fla., and is now 5-4 overall.

ENC (5-4) only managed to score in one inning, but that ended up being all the runs it would need. Eastern Nazarene took advantage of three walks, four singles and a wild pitch to score four runs and take a 4-0 lead after one inning.

After the first inning, CSB's defense cracked down and only gave up two more hits and allowed four base runners total in the remaining six innings, but the damage had been done. The Bennies made it a two-run game in the third when Kendra Swanson walked, Jordyn Swoboda singled and both scored on a two-run single from Sheridan Glashan. The team got within one in the fourth thanks to a pair of ENC errors, but that's as close as CSB would get. Alex Smith doubled and got to third in the fifth but was stranded there, and a pair of singles in the sixth put runners on second and third, but none were able to score.

Six different players had a hit for Saint Benedict, which finished with six total hits. Grace Gilmore took the loss after giving up four runs on six hits. She struck out six batters in six innings of work.

CSB, which flew to Tucson, Ariz., Wednesday night, is off until Friday, March 6, when the teams plays Emory and Washington St. Louis in the first day of the invite-only NFCA Leadoff Classic.
