ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After a close loss to Hamline that came down to the final buzzer Saturday, the College of Saint Benedict basketball team is looking to turn things around going into the last leg of its season. The Bennies' next match up is at St. Olaf College on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. in Northfield.
About the Oles
St. Olaf is 8-11 overall and 5-9 in the conference heading into Wednesday's game. The Oles are on a two-game losing streak after dropping games to Hamline (69-63) and ST. Kate's (71-48) last week. The Oles average 61.6 points per game and they have a total of 1,170 points this season. Rachel Kelly and K'Lynn Lewis both average 11.4 points per game, and Kelly leads the team with a .537 field-goal percentage. Camryn Scott leads the team with just over seven rebounds per game.
Last Meeting
The last time these teams met was in February of last year, and CSB won 74-71.
Megan Thompson scored 24 points in the game,
Alex Johnson had 12 points, and both
Maddie Schmitz and
McKenzie Holgate had 10 points. Overall against St. Olaf, CSB is 48-6 and 23-2 away. Thompson went 4-for-4 from the line down the stretch to help seal the win against the Oles, who hit two 3-pointers in the final 17 seconds of play.
Storyline
The CSB basketball team gained some momentum back last week with an upset road win over beat No. 23 Gustavus, but were disappointed Saturday after a tight loss to the Pipers. The Bennies are hoping to continue to build their team up and hopefully get into rhythm before the end of the regular season. The team has six games left starting with St. Olaf before traveling to Augsburg this Saturday.
Who to Watch
Alex Johnson is second in the MIAC for rebounds per game with 8.3, she also averages just under eight points per game. Two players for CSB have over 200 points both averaging double digits per game.
Megan Thompson has 211 points overall with 11.7 per game and
Sidney Schiffler has 201 points, averaging 10.6 per game. Schiffler is also ranked third in the MIAC for three-point percentage at .429.
