CSB basketball looks to avenge December loss against Knights

01/24/2020

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – In December, Carleton came to town and snuck away with a one-point win against the College of Saint Benedict basketball team. Saturday in Northfield, CSB is looking to return the favor.

The Bennies head south Saturday afternoon for a 3 p.m. contest against the nights. The team looks to avenge its first MIAC loss of the season – a 64-63 loss to the Knights on Dec. 9 in Claire Lynch.

About the Knights
Since beating CSB in December, the Knights are 2-8 and head into Saturday's game on a five-game losing streak. The Knights came up just short against 22nd-ranked St. Thomas on Jan. 15, and also took on No. 10 Bethel on Jan. 22. Katie Chavez continues to lead the team in scoring with 17.1 points per game, and both Samantha Cooke and Jill Yanai average at least 11 points per game. Yanai leads the team with 6.3 rebounds per game, and Aiana Whitefield has 46 assists and 35 steals.

Last Matchup
The Knights won by a single point when the two teams met in December. Carleton led by as many as nine in the fourth quarter, and a late run by the Bennies came up just short. Shae Olsen hit a three with four seconds left, but the Knights were able to control the ball for the final seconds of the game. Megan Thompson and Sidney Schiffler each had 12 points, and Schiffler also had six assists.

The Storyline
Saint Benedict heads into Saturday's game looking to bounce back from a tough road loss at Concordia Wednesday. Megan Thompson hit a three with 1:26 left to put her team up one, and Alex Johnson got a steal on the Cobbers' next possession, but Concordia scored the with five seconds left to go up one, and CSB couldn't answer on the other end. The Bennies look to avoid another losing streak and get back on track as the 2019-20 regular season starts to wind down.

Who to Watch
Both Thompson and Alex Johnson had 10 points against the Cobbers, and Thompson and Sidney Schiffler average double digits to lead the team in scoring. Alex Johnson is still second in the MIAC at 8.6 rebounds per game, and Shae Olsen had a team-high six rebounds Wednesday in Moorhead.
