Tennis wraps up fall season with two wins

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of its 2019-20 season Saturday with a pair of nonconference wins – including a win against Division II Bemidji State.

CSB started the day with a 9-0 sweep of Wisconsin rival UW-Stout, and wrapped up the season later in the afternoon with a 5-2 win over Bemidji. BSU and CSB used Division II scoring rules in the matchup. This marks the third straight season that Saint Benedict has defeated at least one Division II school.

"This fall was all about laying the groundwork for a great spring," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "(Saturday) we did just that, and gave ourselves a ton of positive momentum heading into the off season. I already can't wait for the spring, and I know every athlete is counting down the days until spring season kicks off."

Kayla McIver, Grace Lee and Anne Bowe all went undefeated at singles play for CSB Saturday afternoon, and Bowe's two wins pushes her singles record to 5-0 so far this season. She won at No. 5 singles against Stout and No. 4 singles against the Beavers. Lee won at No. 4 singles against Stout and No. 5 singles against BSU, and McIver played both matches at No. 3 singles.

Tessa Rahrick and Lily Fredericks were both very close to an undefeated day. After a win at No. 1 singles against the Blue Devils, Rahrick fell 7-5, 6-4 against the Beavers. Fredericks picked up a win at No. 2 singles against Stout before falling 4-6, 6-4, 7-10 to Bemidji State. Karsen Aune won at No. 6 singles against Bemidji and Maria Bedford won at No. 6 singles against Stout.

Rahrick and Fredericks teamed up to win a thriller at No. 1 doubles against Bemidji. They won 8-7 (8-6). McIver and Bowe won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles, and Bedford and Aune won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles. At doubles against Stout, McIver and Fredericks won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, Rahrick and Bedford won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles and Bowe and Aune won 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.

CSB is off now until February when the team starts MIAC play during the spring portion of its schedule.
