ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team had a historic season on the court in 2018, but that didn't mean that the members of the team that reached the Sweet 16 were slouches in the classroom.

CSB was one of a record 1,125 teams to earn the AVCA Team Academic Award for 2018, the organization announced Monday afternoon. That number breaks the previous record of 977 teams. Of the 1,125 teams to earn the academic honor, 175 were from Division III. In order to be honored, teams must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30.

This marks the seventh straight season that Saint Benedict has earned the AVCA's team academic award, and ninth time in the past 10 seasons. Since the award began in 1992, CSB has been honored 20 times. CSB is one of 10 MIAC schools to earn academic honors in 2018, and is joined by Augsburg, Bethel, Carleton, Hamline, St. Kate's, St. Olaf, St. Thomas, Macalester and Gustavus.

CSB was able to maintain an impressive GPA while also impressing on the court. The team made it to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2012 after finishing second in the MIAC. Sophomores Hunter Weiss and Madison Weiss both earned All-American honors, and the team won 26 games – the most since winning 27 in 2013.

Saint Benedict kicks off the 2019 season Friday, Aug. 30, when it plays Whitman and Neumann at the Trinity National Invite in San Antonio, Texas.
