NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team headed to Northfield Friday for a match against one of the top teams in Division III, and fell 9-0 to Carleton, which leads the MIAC.
With one match left in the regular season, CSB is now 9-7 overall and 2-7 in the conference. The Knights – ranked 27
th in Division III – are 15-2 overall and 9-0 in the league. Saint Benedict wraps up the 2018-19 season Saturday with a home match against Macalester.
"Carleton is at the top of the MIAC, so we knew it was going to be a tough test," CSB head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "I thought we did a great job showing we can hang with them on any given point. We just need to focus on the consistency in which we play points at a high level."
CSB's No. 1 doubles team of
Tessa Rahrick and
Lily Fredericks held their own against the Knights but fell 8-5. At No. 2 doubles,
Karsen Aune and
Kayla McIver lost 8-1, and
Mackenzie Schurhamer and
Lauren Clark fell by the same score at No. 3 doubles.
Rahrick fell 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, and McIver lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Fredericks fell 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Schurhamer dropped a pair of 6-1, 6-1 sets at No. 4 singles. Aune lost 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, and
Gabbie Noack fell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
Saint Benedict wraps up its season Saturday when it hosts Macalester. That match – originally scheduled to be played outdoors on CSB's campus – is now at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Sta-Fit in Sartell.
