CSB picks up two more wins in Florida

PLANT CITY, Fla. – After having both games postponed Monday due to wet field conditions in Florida, the College of Saint Benedict softball team picked up Tuesday right where it left of Sunday afternoon with two more wins on its spring break trip.

Tuesday's games were pushed back to night games due to rain in the morning, but CSB pushed through and beat Heidelberg 5-2 and Muskingum 7-2 in Plant City.

In the first game of the night, Saint Benedict jumped to an early leave thanks to a Kate Deming triple, an RBI single from Cody Zwack, and RBI triple from Claire Boatman and an RBI groundout from Madison Mikolich. Heidelberg got on the board and cut CSB's lead to one thanks to a wild pitch and an RBI groundout, but Saint Benedict sealed the win with single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Mikolich singled and scored on an RBI single by Sheridan Glashan in the fourth, and Zwack reached on an error and came around to score on an RBI single by Mikolich in the fifth to wrap up scoring for the game.

Mikolich went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs to lead CSB, which had eight total hits. Alex Smith threw the first four innings and picked up the win after giving up two runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Grace Gilmore threw the final three innings and earned the save after giving up a pair of hits with three strikeouts.

In the second game of the night, Saint Benedict used a big fourth inning to pull away for a win over the previously undefeated Muskingum. Deming hit a leadoff single and scored on an RBI single by Emilie Antony to put CSB up 1-0 after one inning. After two scoreless innings, Mikolich doubled to start the fourth and scored on an RBI single by Kennedy Kehr, then three straight runs scored on wild pitches or passed balls to put CSB up 5-0.

Muskingum got two runs back in the sixth on an error, a walk and a two-run double, but first year Lizzy Walker hit the first home run of her collegiate career to make it 7-2 and seal the win.

Deming, Zwack and Walker all had two hits and Walker led the team with two RBIs. Saint Benedict finished with 11 hits to Muskingum's three. Ally Hjort picked up her second win of the season after giving up two runs – one earned – on three hits with seven strikeouts.

CSB is back in action Wednesday when it plays the two games previously scheduled for Monday. Saint Benedict takes on Emerson at 11 a.m. EDT and WPI at 1 p.m.
