FARGO, N.D. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team started MIAC play with an 8-1 win over Concordia Saturday afternoon.
The 8-1 win also pushed CSB's winning streak to eight matches this season, and leaves the team undefeated at 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the league. This is the team's best start since 2005-06 when it won 11 straight matches to kick off the season.
"We had a great response (Saturday) after an emotional night (Friday)," CSB head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "It took a little while to get going, but we found our CSB groove and finished strong. It feels good to get the first conference match out of the way, and we are looking forward to the challenge next Saturday."
Concordia (3-11, 0-5) picked up one win in doubles play, but that was it for the rest of the match Saturday in Fargo.
Lily Fredericks and
Kayla McIvers won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, and
Tessa Rahrick and
Erin Kolbow won by the same score at No. 2 doubles. The Cobbers beat
Mackenzie Schurhamer and
Karsen Aune 8-6 at No. 3 doubles, but that was their only point of the night.
Rahrick won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, and McIver won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Fredericks stayed undefeated in singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, and Kolbow won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Schurhamer won 6-1, 6-0, and Aune wrapped up the night with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 6 singles.
CSB is off now until next Saturday, March 23, when it takes on St. Kate's at Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
