ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team knew it would have its hands full Friday night when top-ranked St. Thomas came to town, and the Tommies lived up to the billing. UST outshot Saint Benedict, and tried to control the game with quick passes and fast plays, but CSB was right there every step of the way.
CSB gave up a single goal in each period and fell 3-0 to No. 1 St. Thomas Friday at the MAC in St. Cloud. CSB is now 7-11-2 overall and 4-9-2 in the MIAC. The Tommies stay unbeaten at 20-0-2 overall and 13-0-2 in the league.
The Tommies came out fast, and
Julia Carle made several early shots in net.
Zoe Culshaw-Klein also had a pair of blocked shots early in the first. UST got on the board at the 9:38 mark of the first when Maddy Fiedler deflected the shot of one of her teammates past Carle into the back of the net. Carle made four saves on a penalty kill, and CSB ended the period down 1-0.
It was Saint Benedict that came out hot to start the second.
Riley Schneider had a breakaway early in the period that was saved, and
Mollie Wise and
Shelby Schneider had back-to-back shots. The Tommies scored their second goal at 7:27 when they had several shots right in front of the net and were able to scoop one past Carle, who finished the second period with 18 saves.
Schneider and
Annika Brodt each had shots on net to start the third, but neither were able to find the back of the net. Riley had a shot that bounced up off UST's goalie's stick, over her shoulder and onto the top of the net, narrowly missing falling back into the goal. The Tommies wrapped up scoring at the 14:44 mark of the third.
CSB finished with 17 shots on net to the Tommies' 45. Carle had a season-high 42 saves to help keep her team in the game. Schneider finished with four shots on net and Brodt and
Shelby Schneider each added three. Saint Benedict killed off both of its penalties – the only two penalties called all game.
The two teams face off again at 5 p.m. Saturday in St. Paul.
