CSB travels to Concordia Wednesday

02/06/2019

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball game plays the first of three straight road games Wednesday when it heads to Moorhead for a MIAC contest against Concordia. This marks the second game between the two teams this season, but the first that counts in the MIAC standings. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. in Moorhead as the Cobber men and Saint John's play the second game of the doubleheader starting at 7:45 p.m.

About the Cobbers
Concordia heads into Wednesday's game looking to snap a seven-game losing streak dating back to Jan. 12. The Cobbers have had some close calls in that streak, however, including a three-point home loss to St. Olaf Saturday. Mira Ellefson (11.9) and Grace Wolhowe (10.3) both average double digits scoring, and Kirstin Simmons leads the team with 7.5 rebounds per game.

Last Meeting
Concordia won a meeting between the two teams earlier this season, 74-68 in Claire Lynch Hall. CSB held a 42-35 lead at halftime, but the Cobbers went on a 10-0 run to start the third quarter and controlled the game from there on out. After shooting 61 percent from the field in the first half, CSB shot 34 percent in the second half. Megan Thompson had 19 points, McKenzie Holgate had 12 and Breanna Gates chipped in 11.

The Storyline
After a tough start to the conference season, Saint Benedict has been making moves and is currently in a tie for fifth in the MIAC standings. The team looks to use its last four games of the regular season to keep moving up the standings and potentially earn a home playoff game. Concordia is in 10th in the league with a handful of games remaining, and looks to snap a losing streak and end 2018-19 with some positive momentum.

Who to Watch
Junior Sidney Schiffler played a key role in each of the team's wins last week. She hit the game-winning three in a huge MIAC win over Bethel, then hit a pair of free throws and a three late to seal a home win against Macalester. McKenzie Holgate had a career-high 16 points against the Royals, and Alex Johnson had a pair of big games with 16 points and 13 rebounds against Bethel and 16 points, 10 rebounds against the Scots.
