All-MIAC Basketball honorees for 2018-19

Thompson, Johnson earn All-MIAC First Team honors

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After another successful season and a top-four finish in the MIAC standings, the College of Saint Benedict basketball team had six athletes honored by the league, it was announced Wednesday.
 
Sophomore Megan Thompson and junior Alex Johnson headlined CSB's All-MIAC honorees after earning spots on the All-MIAC First Team. Junior Sidney Schiffler and sophomore Maddie Schmitz earned honorable mention accolades, and first year McKenzie Holgate earned a spot on the All First-Year Team. Senior Breanna Gates was named to the MIAC's All-Sportsmanship Team.
 
This is the first first-team honor for Thompson – in basketball. The sophomore earned honorable mention and first-year team honors last season for CSB basketball, and was named to the All-MIAC First Team in soccer this fall. Thompson led the team and finished 12th in the MIAC in scoring at 13.1 points per game, and she led the team and finished top 15 in the conference in both assists (70) and steals (58). She scored in double digits 20 of the team's 26 games, and scored a career-high 27 points against St. Olaf on Jan. 12.
 
This is the first MIAC honor for Johnson, who finished sixth in the league with 8.3 rebounds per game and 13th with a .466 field-goal percentage. She also finished third on the team in scoring (9.6) and finished third in the MIAC with 43 blocked shots. Johnson scored a career-high 18 points against Simpson on Nov. 17, and pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds against Gustavus on Jan. 9. She led the team in rebounding 16 times this season.
 
This marks the second straight honorable mention honor for Schiffler, who finished second in the MIAC with a .452 three-point percentage. She led the team with 38 3-pointers, and also went 28-for-37 from the line for a team-high 75 percent. Schiffler averaged 7.8 points and 3.0 rebounds per game, and 59 assists and 26 steals. She scored a career-high 20 points Feb. 16 against Carleton. Schmitz earned her first MIAC honor after finishing second on the team and top 20 in the MIAC in scoring at 12.2 points per game. She also averaged 6.2 rebounds per game and 25 blocked shots. She had a career-high 25 points against Concordia, and led the team in scoring 10 times.
 
Holgate played a key role for CSB right away in her first season with the team. She finished sixth on the team with 562 minutes played, and saw playing time in all 26 games. She averaged 7.7 points and 2.8 rebounds per game, and scored 25 points Feb. 6 in an overtime win at Concordia. She scored in double digits eight times.
 
Gates earned a sportsmanship team nod in her fourth and final season with the Saint Benedict basketball program. She finished fourth on the team in minutes played as a senior, and started in all 26 games. She averaged 6.4 points and 3.7 rebounds per game, and also had 59 assists and 41 steals.
 
CSB finished the 2018-19 season 15-11 overall and 11-7 and tied for fourth in the MIAC. CSB hosted a MIAC Tournament game for the second straight season where it fell to Gustavus in the conference semifinals. After going 3-6 before Christmas – including 1-4 in MIAC play – Saint Benedict went 12-5 overall and 10-3 in the MIAC after Christmas to earn a top-four finish in conference play.
