Schneider scores in CSB’s 3-1 loss at Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team dropped the first game of the final series of the 2018-19 season 3-1 to Gustavus Friday night in St. Peter.

The Gusties scored a pair of first-period goals and added a third goal early in the third period to seal the win. With one game left in the season, CSB is 7-13-2 overall and 4-11-2 and in eighth in the MIAC. The Gusties – who have already secured a spot in the five-team conference tournament – are 14-5-5 overall and are tied for third with Augsburg with a 10-3-4 MIAC record.

Both teams had some early shots on net Friday, but it was the Gusties who got on the board first at the 5:42 mark of the first period. CSB went on the power play in the first and had several shot opportunities, but couldn't score, and Gustavus made it 2-0 at the 14-minute mark.

After a late push and a shot on net by Annika Brodt, CSB scored its lone goal of the game with three seconds remaining in the first when Riley Schneider netted her fifth goal of the season. Brodt was credited with the assist – her eighth of the year.

Saint Benedict looked to carry the momentum from the late goal into the second, but the Gusties had several early shots on net that were saved by Kailee Medved. Mollie Wise, Courtney Conlin and Brodt all had shots that were saved, and neither team scored in the second to keep it at 2-1 heading into the third period.

Gustavus didn'tw ate much time in the third before icing the game with a third goal at the 2:41 mark. CSB pulled Medved with two and a half minutes to play, and had a two-woman advantage when Gustavus was called for a penalty, but couldn't find the back of the net.

The Gusties had 40 shots on net to CSB's 20. Brodt led the team with five shots on net and Conlin added three. Medved finished with 37 saves.

CSB wraps up the season at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, when it hosts the Gusties at the MAC in St. Cloud. The game marks the last game for CSB's six seniors: Julie Carle, Jessica Malloy, Mariah Reed, Kylie Eklund, Maddie Dockry and Shelby Schneider.
