ST. JOSEPH, Minn—After Wednesday's loss to St. Thomas, the College of Saint Benedict basketball team looks to end its regular season play with a win against Carleton Saturday to clinch the fourth seed – and a home playoff game. The Bennies take on the Knights at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16 in Claire Lynch Hall.
About Carleton
The Knights sit at the bottom of the MIAC with a 0-17 conference record and a 3-21 overall mark. Carleton won three games at the beginning of the season but has struggled since. On Wednesday, the Knights suffered a 7-680 overtime loss to Concordia. Cece Leone leads Carleton with an average of 12.2 points per game and has scored 280 points this season. Samantha Cooke averages 10 points per game and Annabella Jensen has 147 rebounds.
Last Meeting
Saint Benedict snagged a 75-61 victory over Carleton on January 19 in Northfield. The first half was close, with a 19-19 tie after the first quarter and Saint Benedict leading by two points going into the second half. Carleton's Samantha Cooke scored 24 points overall, but the Bennies' lead grew in the second half, helped by
Maddie Schmitz's 21 points and 11 rebounds. Junior
Alex Johnson had 12 points and eight rebounds and first year
McKenzie Holgate grabbed seven rebounds. The Bennies shot 87.5 percent from the line, but only 38.7 percent from the field.
The Storyline
Saint Benedict suffered a disheartening 90-31 defeat at the hands of No. 3 St. Thomas on Wednesday. The Bennies won two key games last week against St. Olaf and Concordia to clinch a spot in the MIAC playoffs. Saint Benedict's opponent in the playoffs depends on the outcome of Saturday's game. As they are currently tied for fourth place with Gustavus, the Bennies need a win to ensure a home game for the first round of playoffs on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
