Katie Koch earns MIAC Athlete of the Week honors

Koch earns second weekly MIAC honor of 2019

11/04/2019

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Katie Koch has been quietly consistent all season for the College of Saint Benedict volleyball team – putting up numbers that aren't flashy, necessarily, but that still put her in the top five in the MIAC and the top 10 nationally.

Koch added a pair of solid performances to her season resume last week, including 40 or more assists for the 11th time this season – a number that pushed her over the 1,000-assist mark for the season. For her performance, Koch is this week's MIAC Setter of the Week.

This marks the second weekly MIAC honor of the season for Koch, who was also honored after the team's opening weekend in Texas on Sept. 3. It is the third honor of her career, and she joins fellow setters Megan Pekarek, Taya Kockelman, Beth Hanson and Rachel Reuter on the list of CSB setters or liberos that have two or more weekly MIAC accolades to their names.

Koch started last week at St. Thomas, where she put up 37 assists and eight digs in a three-set loss to the Tommies, who won the league's regular-season title. Her biggest performance of the week came Saturday in a sweep of Concordia to help Saint Benedict secure the No. 3 seed in the MIAC Tournament.

She finished the Concordia match with 43 assists, marking the 11th time this season she has had 40 or more assists. She averaged more than 14 assists per set in the three-set win, and that number pushed her past the 1,000-assist milestone for the second straight season. In two seasons as the team's starting setter, Koch has 2,314 assists to her name. She also had nine digs against the Cobbers to bring her season total up to 253, good for third on the team.

Heading into the MIAC Tournament, Koch is fourth in the MIAC in total assists and second in assists per set this season. Prior to the weekend match, she was seventh in DIII in assists per set and 21st in total assists.

Koch and her teammates are at home to start the MIAC Tournament Tuesday, Nov. 5, when they host sixth-seeded Bethel at 7 p.m.
