ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After a come-from-behind win at Macalester Saturday afternoon, the College of Saint Benedict basketball team heads to Gustavus Wednesday night looking to build on that momentum. Tip off for the second meeting between CSB and the Gusties this season is scheduled for 7 p.m. in St. Peter.
About the Gusties
Gustavus heads into Wednesday's game 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the MIAC. The Gusties snapped a two-game losing streak Saturday with a big win over Carleton. Gustavus enjoys home court advantage as it is 6-1 on Gus Young Court and 1-5 on the road. Justine Lee (13), Kendall Thompson (12.9) and Paige Richert (11.2) all average double digits in scoring, and Thompson and Richert also average at least five rebounds per game. Thompson is third in the league at 3.4 steals per game.
Last Meeting
Saint Benedict held on for a 64-61 win over the Gusties to start MIAC play the first time these two teams met on Dec. 1 in St. Joseph. Gustavus got within one with 14 seconds left, but
Megan Thompson hit two free throws late to seal the win.
Maddie Schmitz had 14 points, Thompson had 13 and
McKenzie Holgate finished with 11. Schmitz also had 11 rebounds.
The Storyline
CSB picked up its second conference win of the season Saturday afternoon, and it looks for a third Wednesday. Saint Benedict has beaten the Gusties once, but Gustavus is tough at home, and looking to avenge one of its two MIAC losses of the season. Both teams are looking for some consistency as they head deeper into MIAC play and look to move up the conference standings.
Who to Watch
Schmitz scored 17 points – including 11 in the fourth quarter – to help CSB take over Saturday against the Scots and pull away for the win.
Breanna Gates had a big game with 15 points and
Alex Johnson (13 points, nine rebounds) and
Sidney Schiffler (10 points) also had a big day. Schiffler also had four assists. Schmitz (12.5) and Thompson (12.1) lead the team in scoring, Johnson leads the team in rebounds per game (8.0).
