STEVENS POINT, Wis. – After scoring the game-winning goal in overtime Friday night,
Mollie Wise scored another late goal Saturday to try and help her team pick up its third straight win, but it wasn't quite enough.
The College of Saint Benedict hockey team fell 2-1 to UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon in its second game of a two-day tournament in Stevens Point, Wis. Saturday's game marks the second of three on the weekend for CSB, with one left to play Sunday afternoon.
Both of the Pointers' goals came in the second half of the first period Saturday afternoon. UW-Stevens Point (6-6-2) got on the board in the 12
th minute of the first period on a goal by Lauren Smith, and made it 2-0 six minutes later when Haley Sellers scored in the 18
th minute.
Saint Benedict (4-5-1) had four straight blocked shots early in the first period, and Wise and
Shelby Schneider had shots that were saved after the Pointers' first goal.
Annika Brodt hit the pipe late in the first, but the Pointers' lead held.
Neither team scored in the second period, despite several shots on net for both squads, and Wise got CSB on the board six minutes into the third period. She scored her third goal of the year at the 6:44 mark off an assist from
Julia Pias to make it 2-1. Wise's goal came after six straight shots on net to start the third period for CSB, and Saint Benedict continued to pepper the Pointers' net. CSB pulled goalie
Kailee Medved in the final minute of play, but couldn't score the equalizer.
Saint Benedict outshot UWSP 30-20, including 17-9 in the third period. Wise led the team with five shots on net and Schneider added four. Medved finished with 18 saves for CSB.
CSB wraps up its busy weekend with one final game Sunday, Jan. 6, when it takes on St. Olaf in a nonconference matchup at the Oles' new rink on the St. Olaf campus in Northfield.
