ST. JOSEPH, Minn. –
Clara Noack and
Laurel Poole couldn't have picked a better time to score the first goals of their collegiate careers – and goalie
Kendall Koenen's big day in the net came at a good time as well.
Noack scored twice – including the game-winner in overtime – and Poole put CSB up midway through the second half with the first goal of her CSB career Saturday afternoon to lift the team to a 3-2 overtime win against Wartburg College. The win marked the first of the season for CSB, which is now 1-2 overall heading into MIAC play.
After a scoreless first half, the Knights (2-1) got on the board first two minutes into the second half when Joy Smith scored unassisted on a shot that went under Koenen. That lead only held for 12 minutes, however, as Noack scored the first goal of the day – and her collegiate career – in the 59
th minute off an assist from
Brianna Griffin. Noack took a cross from Griffin on the right side and sent the ball in on a header.
Poole's first collegiate goal came in the 62
nd minute and put CSB up 2-1.
Sydney Sherek got the assist after sending Poole a cross from the right side of the field, which Poole kicked past Wartburg's goalie.
Wartburg tied the game in the 83
rd minute, and the score stayed knotted at 2-2 through the end of regulation. It appeared that the two teams would need a second overtime to decide a winner, but Noack scored again – this time off an assist from
Megan Thompson – after taking a cross in the middle of the field and sending the ball into the left corner of the net to give CSB the win.
The Knights finished with 24 shots to CSB's 11 – including a 14-7 margin in shots on net – but Koenen finished with a career-high 12 saves to help her team to the win. Poole had three shots on net and Noack finished with two.
CSB is back in action and back at home Wednesday, Sept. 12, when it hosts Concordia at 4:30 p.m. in both team's MIAC opener.
