MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. –
Mara Flaherty scored the first two goals of her junior season Wednesday night, and both goals came at a big time for the College of Saint Benedict soccer team.
Flaherty's goals, along with another strong performance in net from junior keeper
Kendall Koenen, lifted CSB to a 2-1 road win at Augsburg Wednesday in Minneapolis. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for CSB, and marked the team's first win over the Auggies on their home field since Sept. 14, 2010.
Wednesday's win also brought the team's MIAC record to an even 2-2. Saint Benedict is now 3-5 overall while the Auggies are 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the MIAC.
The first goal of the game – Flaherty's first of the season – came in the 16
th minute of the game off a long shot the went above the Auggie keeper's head to put CSB up 1-0. That lead held through the end of the first half, and Flaherty gave her team a two-goal cushion early in the second half when she scored her second goal of the year, this one off a rebound from a blocked shot in the top middle of the penalty box.
Abby Welsch was credited with the assist.
Augsburg had chances, and had five shots on net in the second half. The Auggies connected in the 70
th minute to make it 2-1, but Koenen made several late stops to help her team hold onto the win.
The Auggies had 23 shots to CSB's 11, including a 10-4 edge in shots on net, but Koenen finished the night with eight saves to keep her team in the lead.
Clara Noack and
Roxy Veldman both had shots on net for CSB, and both Flaherty and
Megan Thompson had three total shots.
CSB is back at home and for another big MIAC game Saturday, Sept. 29, when it hosts league-leading Bethel at 1 p.m.
