Griffin scores in CSB’s double overtime loss at UST

ST. PAUL, Minn. – On a hot and humid September morning in St. Paul, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team and St. Thomas needed 20 extra minutes to decide a winner.

Each team scored in the first half, but the score stayed 1-1 through regulation and one overtime. Two minutes into the second overtime, the No. 16 Tommies scored to end the game 2-1 in their favor. CSB is now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC, while UST is 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the league.

St. Thomas scored first, five minutes into the game, but Saint Benedict kept pushing. Sydney Sherek put a shot on net, and Megan Thompson had a shot that went wide left before Briana Griffin scored the first goal of her CSB career to tie the game 1-1. The goal – which came in the 42nd minute of the first half – was assisted by first year Roxy Veldman.

Neither team scored in the second half, and Kendall Koenen had two saves to help send the game into overtime. Thompson put a shot on net early in the first overtime, and Clara Noack also had a shot on net. St. Thomas put two shots on net, but both were blocked to keep things tied up.

Koenen had a save early in the second overtime, and the Tommies had another shot blocked and several wide shots, but Kate Heimer scored the game-winner in the 102nd minute to end it in UST's favor.

Saint Benedict had six shots to the Tommies' 20, and UST had an 8-5 edge in shots on net. Koenen finished the day with six saves.

CSB returns home Sunday, Sept. 16, when it hosts UW-Eau Claire in a nonconference match at 4:30 p.m. on the turf field. Saint Benedict returns to MIAC play Saturday, Sept. 22, when it hosts St. Olaf at 1 p.m.
