WHITTIER, Calif. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team start its spring break trip - and its first outdoor match of the season – with a win Tuesday evening. Saint Benedict beat Whitter 6-3 in Whittier, Calif., in the first of its three matches in California.
"Playing your first match outdoors is always tough, and we did a good job adjusting to the conditions," head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "It was a good win for us, and gave us a lot to focus on for Thursday. We definitely earned a day off (Wednesday) and are looking forward to two good matches Thursday."
Whittier (0-1) picked up the win at No. 1 doubles to start the match, but
Erin Kolbow and
Lauren Clark won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles and
Ellen Stensrud and
Mackenzie Schurhamer won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles to wrap up doubles play and give CSB a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
The Poets won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to take a 3-2 lead, but CSB – which is now 8-2 – won the remaining four matches to pull out the win.
Stensrud won 7-6, 6-3, at No. 3 singles to tie the match, and
Kayla McIver picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles to put CSB in the lead for good. Schurhamer also won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles , and
Kylie Miller fought through for a 6-7, 6-3 (11-9) win at No. 6 singles to finish out the match.
CSB is off Wednesday and is back in action Thursday with two more matches against Occidental and Hope International.
