TUCSON, Ariz. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team used some big bats and timely hits to start its 2018 spring break trip with a pair of wins Monday afternoon. CSB started the day with a 6-4 win over fellow-Minnesota school Bethany Lutheran, and wrapped up the day with a 7-0 shutout of Husson in Tucson, Ariz.
Bethany Lutheran (1-4) took a 1-0 lead over CSB thanks to a single and a pair of sac bunts in the second inning. CSB tied the game in the third when
Kate Deming doubled and scored on an RBI single from
Sara Wennerstrand, and
Olivia Olson gave the team a 2-1 lead in the fourth with a solo homer.
Saint Benedict (7-1) tacked on four runs in the sixth.
Claire Boatman singled, Olson hit an RBI double and
Karlee Pfaff walked, then Deming hit a three-run homer over the left field fence to make it a 6-1 game. Three straight singles loaded the bases for BLC in the top of the seventh, and two runs scored on a double up the middle to make it 6-3. Bethany Lutheran added one more run on an RBI groundout, but a pop up to
Megan Toninato at first base ended the game.
Deming finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Olson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Jocelyn Metz threw the first five innings to pick up her second win of the season. She gave up a single run on four hits.
Alex Smith threw the final two innings and gave up three runs on four hits.
CSB took an early lead in the second game of the day against Husson and never looked back. Deming scored on a passed ball, another run scored on an error and Olson added her third extra-bases hit of the day with an RBI triple to make it 3-0.
Hailey Monroe hit an inside-the-park home run down the left-field line in the second to make it 4-0. And
Kiela DeVlaeminck hit a two-run single and later stole home as part of a three-run fifth.
First-year pitcher
Ally Hjort gave up just two hits in six innings of work and picked up her second win of the season. She struck out six batters.
Kadee Vesledahl threw the final inning and gave up three hits.
Amanda Haley went 2-for-2 at bat to lead CSB, which had nine hits.
Emilie Antony had a triple for CSB.
Saint Benedict returns to action Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. CST against SUNY Oneonta and then again at 4:30 p.m. CST against No. 21 Central (Iowa).
