ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After a pair of overtime games at its home tournament, the College of Saint Benedict basketball team got a week off to breathe and recover and enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday. Now, CSB is back in action with a pair of nonconference games to start the week.
CSB hosts Concordia at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in a nonconference matchup in Claire Lynch, then hits the road as it heads to Superior, Wis., for a 5 p.m. game at UW-Superior Wednesday.
About the Cobbers
Concordia is 1-2 so far this season, but both losses have been by five points or less. The Cobbers started the season with a two-point loss to Calvin in Michigan. Mira Ellefson and Grace Wolhowe are both 10th in the MIAC in scoring at 14.7 points per game, and Kirstin Simmons is 11th with 7.7 rebounds per game.
About the Yellowjackets
UW-Superior is 3-1 overall and is coming off a 58-50 road win at Division II Bemidji State Monday night. The Yellowjackets started the year with wins over Carthage and St. Norbert before falling to Augsburg. Hannah Norlin averages 18.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, and Eva Reinersten also averages 14.5 points per game.
Last Meeting
Saint Benedict swept Concordia in a pair of MIAC games last season, including a 74-54 win in St. Joseph on Jan. 31.
Sidney Schiffler had a career-high 18 points to lead the team and
Megan Thompson also had 10 points.
Alex Johnson led the team with 10 rebounds.
CSB also beat Superior 61-58 in a close game in Claire Lynch last season. CSB led by as many as nine points in the fourth before the Jackets went on a run and made it a one-point game with three seconds left, but
Haylee Fingalsen hit a pair of free throws to seal the win.
Maddie Schmitz had 13 points and four rebounds.
The Storyline
Saint Benedict got off to a 2-1 start before Thanksgiving, including a pair of overtime games in its home tournament. With two nonconference games left before a big MIAC opener, CSB looks to gain some more momentum heading into the weekend.
Who to Watch
Maddie Schmitz had a big weekend at the team's tournament Nov. 16-17. She had a career-high 23 points in a double overtime win against Nebraska Wesleyan, and just missed tying that the next night with 22 points in an overtime loss to Simpson.
Megan Thompson tied her career-high with 18 points in a season-opening win at Morris, and
Alex Johnson had a career-high 18 points against the Storm.
