MOORHEAD, Minn. – When the College of Saint Benedict volleyball team and Concordia played in nonconference action earlier this season, CSB won in a sweep, but the Cobbers pushed each set. Saturday afternoon, Concordia managed to snag a set, but Saint Benedict wrapped up its regular season with a 3-1 in Moorhead.
CSB finished the regular season 23-6 overall and 10-1 and in second in the MIAC. The top-two finish gives CSB a bye Tuesday in the first round of the MIAC Tournament, and the team hosts the winner of the St. Thomas/St. Olaf quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in Claire Lynch. This marks the second straight season that CSB has finished second in the regular-season standings.
Saint Benedict picked up its second straight win and 10
th in its last 11 matches thanks to set scores of 25-20, 25-16, 22-25 and 25-18. The loss wraps up the 2018 season for Concordia, which finishes the year 9-18 overall and 4-7 in the league.
Hunter Weiss and
Madison Weiss both finished with 14 kills to elad CSB, which hit .208 to the Cobbers' .111 hitting percentage.
Lauren Mathews added 13 kills, and
Madison Weiss finished with eight total blocks.
Katie Koch just missed her career-high with 46 assists, and she also had 12 digs.
Haley LaValle paced the defense with 27 digs and
Bridget McDonald and
Liz Schultz both added 19 digs.
Brianna Carney led Concordia with 15 kills. Lexi Turn had 22 assists, and Kortney Carney had a match-high 33 digs for the Cobbers.
Gustavus finished the 2018 MIAC season undefeated thanks to a win over Saint Mary's Friday, and earned the No. 1 seed and home-court advantage throughout the MIAC Tournament. St. Thomas hosts the Oles in the No. 3/No. 6 matchup Tuesday, and No. 4 Bethel hosts No. 5 Augsburg in the other quarterfinal. The Gusties host the Bethel/Augsburg winner Thursday to determine who earns a spot in the 2018 MIAC Championship match.
