Veldman’s goal lifts CSB to overtime win

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – With MIAC Tournament seeding at stake, first year Roxy Veldman came through big time for the College of Saint Benedict soccer team Wednesday afternoon.

After 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, Veldman scored the second goal of her collegiate career just over a minute into overtime to lift Saint Benedict to a 1-0 win over Macalester. With one game left in the regular season, CSB is now 7-6-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the MIAC. Thanks to CSB's win and a St. Kate's win over St. Olaf, CSB and the Oles are tied for fifth in the league standings.

Saint Benedict – which has won three straight games – came out swinging to start Wednesday's game. Sydney Sherek and Maren Noble both had shots on net in the first 10 minutes of the game, but they were all saved by the Scots. Veldman had a shot on net midway through the half, and Laurel Poole had a shot on net late in the first that was saved by Kayla Togneri.

The second half was much quieter to start, but CSB came on strong again at the end of regulation. Noble had another solid shot that was saved, and in the final minutes of the second half, Sherek had a shot on a fairly open net that went wide, and Megan Thompson put a hard shot on Togneri that was saved.

CSB got the ball right away in overtime, and Veldman took a long pass from Margo Achterkirch, and took a quick shot past one Macalester defender just inside the box to end the game.

Saint Benedict finished with 17 shots while Macalester (4-8-3, 1-6-3) had four. CSB had 10 shots on net to the Scots' two, and Kendall Koenen stopped both shots she faced to preserve the shutout. Togneri made nine saves for Macalester.

CSB wraps up the regular season Saturday, Oct. 27, when it travels to Northfield to take on Carleton. The Knights are already out of the playoffs, but sit just behind CSB in the overall conference standings.
