SARTELL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team kicked off the spring portion of its 2017-18 schedule with a 7-2 win over Northwestern (Minn.) Saturday evening at Sta-Fit in Sartell.
CSB – which is now 2-1 – started the evening with a pair of doubles wins, and followed that up by winning five of six singles matches en route to the win.
"(Saturday) was a great first match of the season for us," head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "Mentally, we achieved our goal for the week and we gave ourselves the perfect platform to grow from headed into next weekend. Everyone should be excited in how they played, and we have set ourselves up for an amazing spring season."
Ellen Stensrud and
Mackenzie Schurhamer started things off for Saint Benedict with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles, and
Erin Kolbow and
Lauren Clark picked up an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
Tessa Rahrick lost in a super breaker at No. 1 singles, winning the first set 6-4, but losing 4-6 in the second set and falling 10-2 in the super breaker.
Kolbow was winning 5-1 at No. 2 singles when her opponent withdrew due to injury to give CSB its first singles win of the night.
Ellen Stensrud picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles, and
Kayla McIver won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
Schurhamer won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, and
Gabbie Noack wrapped up the evening with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles.
Saint Benedict is back at home Friday, Feb. 2, when it hosts St. Cloud State at 6 p.m. at Sta-Fit.
