Penalties doom CSB in loss to Concordia

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team was within a single goal of Concordia, but a pair of goals late in the third period helped push the Cobbers to a 5-2 win over CSB Saturday afternoon in Moorhead.

Three of Concordia's five goals came on the power play, and the Cobbers' fifth and final goal came after CSB had pulled goalie Kailee Medved in the final minute of play.

Concordia (9-6-2, 6-2-2) went up 2-0 on CSB in the first thanks to a power play goal and a shorthanded goal. The Cobbers scored on the power play in the eighth minute and a shorthanded goal in the 14th minute, but Saint Benedict (2-13-1, 1-8-1) made it a one-goal game in the final minute of the first when Brigette Miller scored off an assist from Maddie Dockry. That marked Miller's seventh goal of the season.

The Cobbers scored the lone goal of the second period on a power play in the 12th minute to go up 3-1, but CSB made it a one-goal game again when Mollie Wise scored off an assist from Dockry in the eighth minute of the third and final period.

Concordia scored a pair of unanswered goals, though, including a third power play goal and an empty-net goal with 61 seconds left to play.

CSB had 20 shots on net to Concordia's 36, and Medved finished the day with 31 saves. Wise, Kaitlyn Miller and Shelby Schneider all had three shots on net.

Saint Benedict returns home to host St. Kate's Friday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m.
