CSB heads to Macalester looking for 10th straight win

ST.JOSEPH, Minn.- The College of Saint Benedict basketball team is on fire, coming out of winter break with a nine-game winning streak. The team looks to make it 10 in a row as it takes on Macalester on Wednesday, Jan. 17, when it travels to St. Paul to tip off against the Scots at 7 p.m.

About Macalester
Currently, the Scots are 6-9 overall and 2-6 in MIAC play. They are coming off a double-digit win over Martin Luther College on Monday. This season, Regan Fruh leads the team in points (217) and 14.5 points per game. She is ranked fifth in the MIAC for points. Holly Hull is next on the team with 124 points. Last season, the Scots did not qualify for the MIAC tournament and were 11-14 overall.

Last Game
Earlier this season, Saint Benedict beat the Scots 66-44 in Claire Lynch Hall. The first half was close, ending 32-29 with Saint Benedict holding the lead. Saint Ben's pulled away in the second half, with senior Niki Fokken scoring 28 points, and Kate Banovetz and Chelsey Guetter also scoring double-digits. Regan Fruh led the Scots with 16 points.

Who to Watch
Saint Benedict seniors Niki Fokken, Chelsey Guetter, and Kate Banovetz have all had strong showings this season. The three team leaders have 175 (Fokken), 157 (Guetter), and 105 (Banovetz) points. Fokken has an average of 12.5 points per game, and was last week's CSB Athlete of the Week. First year Maddie Schmitz is right behind Banovetz with 95 points overall. Guetter leads the team with 6.8 rebounds per game, and Fokken is right behind at 6.0.

The Storyline
Saint Benedict's season is going swimmingly with a nine-game winning streak and a 14-1 overall record. CSB is coming off a 59-45 win last Saturday over Augsburg College. After two games in the Twin Cities, CSB hopes for a home victory on Saturday against St. Thomas, which is 8-0 in conference play and ranked No. 13 nationally. CSB, which is the fourth team listed in the "Others Receiving Votes" section of the latest d3hoops.com poll, is off to its best overall start since 2003-04, and is 8-0 in the MIAC for the first time since 2008-09.
