ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team is back in Minnesota this week and on the road for the second week of the season. CSB volleyball plays at Augsburg in a nonconference matchup in Minneapolis at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8. CSB plays its first home game of the year Sept. 22.
About Augsburg
Augsburg is off to a 4-0 record this season, and only lost three sets. Last year, Augsburg finished 18-10 overall and 11-0 in the MIAC, before losing in the conference semifinals to Bethel. The Auggies narrowly defeated CSB last year 3-2 in St. Joseph. This year Augsburg is led by Corrina Evans with 45 kills, Morgan Malley with 172 assists, and Macey Terhell with 76 digs.
Who to Watch
A handful of leaders appeared for CSB's offense in the team's first four games of the year last weekend in Washington. Junior
Liz Schultz leads the team with 43 kills, but first year
Hunter Weiss had a monster weekend – including 29 kills in her first two games – and is right behind with 41.
Briana Schmiesing (39) and
Lauren Mathews (26) also had solid weekends. Senior setter
Megan Pekarek picked up right where she left off with 149 assists in four games, and she also had 17 kills.
Haley LaValle has a team-high 73 digs and Schultz has 54. LaValle and Pekarek both earned a spot on the Puget Sound Invite All-Tournament Team.
The Storyline
After losing its first three matches in Washington, Saint Benedict wrapped up the trip with a hard-fought, 3-2 win over Edgewood last weekend to wrap up the trip and head home with the first win of the season under its belt. CSB gets an early taste of MIAC action in a nonconference setting Friday, and Augsburg should be a good test for the young CSB squad. Saint Benedict is also getting used to playing on the road, as the team isn't at home until Sept. 22. After this weekend, CSB starts MIAC play Sept. 13 at St. Kate's.
