ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – It was a team win for the College of Saint Benedict volleyball team Tuesday night.
Twelve different players saw the floor for CSB in its 3-0, nonconference sweep of St. Scholastica. CSB won 25-18, 25-18 and 25-12 in the match, played in Claire Lynch Hall.
Saint Benedict – which is now 7-6 overall – jumped to a 9-3 lead in the first set, and eventually pushed its lead to 11, 17-6, thanks to a pair of kills from
Hunter Weiss. The Saints (5-12) made a small run, but a pair of kills from
Madison Weiss ended the match.
In set two it was the Saints who snagged a 9-5 lead early, but
Madison Weiss had a pair of kills, St. Scholastica had two attack errors and
Hunter Weiss had a kill to tie the score 10-10. The Saints went on another small run to take a lead, but
Lauren Mathews,
Megan Pekarek and
Briana Schmiesing all had kills to help tie the game at 16-16, and then three straight kills from
Madison Weiss made it 20-16 and put CSB up for good.
Saint Benedict came out hot against in set three, and led 7-3 early. The closest the Saints got all set was four points early in the third set.
Madison Weiss led the team with a career-high 15 kills and hit .583 with just one attack error.
Hunter Weiss added 12 kills for CSB, which had 48 kills to the Saints' 28. Mathews added eight kills and Pekarek finished with 38 assists and eight digs.
Liz Schultz led the defense with 11 digs and
Haley LaValle also finished with eight digs.
Brooke Schermann led St. Scholastica with 10 kills, Kelsi Rippberger had 25 assists and Schermann also led all defenders with 14 digs.
Saint Benedict returns to MIAC play this weekend when it hits the road for a pair of matches. CSB is at Saint Mary's Friday in Winona, then at Carleton Saturday in Northfield.
