ST. PETER, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team continued to pick up steam in its run through MIAC play Saturday afternoon as it swept Gustavus in a pair of conference games in St. Peter, Minn.
CSB won 7-4 and 5-4 to improve to 19-5 overall and remain undefeated in the MIAC at 8-0. This marks the best start for Saint Benedict since 2004 when it start the year 19-4 and went 12-2 in conference play before eventually wrapping up the season second in the league at 29-7 overall and 18-4 in the conference.
Saint Benedict got on the board early in the first game when
Emilie Antony singled and came around to score on an RBI single by
Sara Wennerstrand. Gustavus (15-11, 2-6) added a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, but CSB took the lead for good thanks to a four-run fourth inning. CSB scored two runs on an error to make it 3-2, Antony scored on a passed ball and
Claire Boatman had an RBI triple.
Saint Benedict added two more runs in the fifth thanks to another Gustie error and an RBI single by
Kiela DeVlaeminck.
Six different players had hits for CSB, including Boatman's triple. DeVlaemicnk gave up four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts to earn her seventh win of the year.
CSB took a 1-0 lead to start Game 2 as well thanks to an RBI double by Wennerstrand. Gustavus tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, but CSB scored three runs in the fifth to take the lead for good.
Megan Toninato sent in a run on a sac bunt, and Wennerstrand sent in two more runs on with her second double of the game. The Gusties made it a one-run game in the bottom of the inning, but
Karlee Pfaff had an RBI single in the seventh to give CSB some insurance.
Wennerstrand went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead CSB, which had nine total hits.
Cassie Meyer gave up three runs on seven hits with one strikeout to earn the win.
Saint Benedict is back in action and back at home at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 9, when it hosts Augsburg College and looks to pick up its fifth straight MIAC sweep.
