Wennerstrand’s walkoff pushes CSB’s streak to 10

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The latest win in the College of Saint Benedict softball team's streak didn't come easy, but the streak is still alive.

After winning the first game of a doubleheader against Augsburg 6-3, CSB was down 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh in the second game Tuesday afternoon. CSB tied the game on an RBI single from Claire Boatman to force extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Sara Wennerstrand hit a walkoff RBI single to end the game 3-2 in favor of CSB and push the team's winning streak to 10 games.

Saint Benedict is now 21-5 overall and is one game away from matching its win total from each of the last two seasons. CSB is alone in first in the MIAC with a 10-0 conference record. Saint Benedict has swept each of the five conference opponents it has faced this season.

CSB took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the second game when Karlee Pfaff doubled and later scored on an Auggie error. Augsburg tied the game in the third on an RBI single, and took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on another RBI single. Wennerstrand and Pfaff both singled to start the bottom of the seventh, and Wennerstrand scored when Claire Boatman bunted the ball through the legs of several Augsburg fielders. Pfaff made it to third, but was stranded as the Auggies recorded the next two outs.

A double and a single put runners at second and third for the Auggies in the top of the eighth, but a pair of groundouts ended the threat. Kate Deming singled to start the bottom of the inning and moved to second on a sac bunt by Megan Toninato. She scored when Wennerstrand sent a long shot to center field to give CSB the win.

Pfaff went 3-for-3 with a double to lead CSB, which had 10 hits. Wennerstrand and Deming each had two hits. Alex Smith threw the first five innings and gave up a single run on five hits with five strikeouts. Cassie Meyer threw the final three innings and earned the win after giving up a single run on five hits with three strikeouts.

Saint Benedict got off to a solid start in the first inning of the first game thanks to a solo home run from Megan Toninato and an RBI single from Pfaff to take a 2-0 lead. The Auggies (16-12, 4-6) added a single run in the third on a solo homer, and tied the game in the fourth on a two-run double – both by Brianna Cline.

CSB broke the game open in the fifth inning, however, thanks to three hits and a pair of Augsburg errors. Boatman and Kendra Swanson both had RBI singles, and another run scored on an error to make it 5-3. CSB added a single run in the sixth on another Auggie error to wrap up scoring.

Toninato, Wennerstrand and Boatman each had two of CSB's 11 hits, including a double from Wennerstrand. Kiela DeVlaeminck threw all seven inning to earn her eighth win of the year. She gave up three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.

Saint Benedict is back at home Thursday, April 13, when it hosts St. Olaf in a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
