ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team added 12 more runs, 17 more hits and two more wins to its weekend total Sunday afternoon. CSB also improved to 4-0 in the MIAC when it beat Saint Mary's 8-2 and 4-1 in St. Joseph, Minn.
CSB is now on a four-game winning streak heading into next week when it plays a trio of conference doubleheaders.
CSB (15-5, 4-0) got on the board early against Saint Mary's (6-14, 0-4) thanks to an RBI sac fly by
Sara Wennerstrand in the first inning of the first game.
Emilie Antony had a two-run double and
Claire Boatman hit a two-run homer as part of a five-run second inning to make it 6-1, and CSB ended the scoring in the sixth with an RBI double from
Kate Deming and an RBI single by Antony. Saint Mary's added a single run in the top of the sixth.
Boatman finished 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and Deming and Antony each went 2-for-3 – and Antony had three RBIs – to lead Saint Benedict, which had nine hits. Kiela DeVlaemnick threw the first six innings and gave up two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts to earn the win.
Jocelyn Metz struck out two in the final inning.
A three-run first in the second game gave CSB all the runs it would need in a 4-1 win in Game 2. Wennerstrand had a two-run single and Boatman sent in another run on an RBI single for CSB, which wouldn't score again until
Kendra Swanson hit a solo homer in the sixth inning for some insurance. Saint Mary's lone run came in the third inning.
Megan Toninato and Boatman each had two of CSB's eight hits in game two. Metz earned her first win of the season after throwing the first four innings and give up a single run on four hits.
Cassie Meyer earned the save after giving up one hit and striking out two batters in the final three innings.
Saint Benedict is on the road Wednesday, April 5, when it travels to Northfield to take on Carleton. CSB is at Gustavus Saturday, April 8, and hosts Augsburg at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 9.
