LEESBURG, Fla. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team split a pair of games in its second day of action Tuesday morning in Leesburg, Fla. CSB started the day with a 5-4, nine-inning win against Alfred before falling 10-6 to Mount Union.
In its first game of the day, CSB scored unearned runs in the second and third innings to go up 2-0.
Sara Wennerstrand singled and came around to score on two Alfred errors in the second inning and
Kate Deming singled, stole two bases and then scored on an error in the third.
Alfred tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, and the score stayed tied 2-2 through the end of seven. Both teams added a single run in the eighth inning. Deming scored CSB's run on an RBI groundout by
Emilie Antony. In the top of the ninth,
Olivia Olson hit the second homer of her career, this one a two-run shot that included the eventual winning run as Alfred only scored once in the bottom of the inning.
Wennerstrand finished 2-for-3 and Olson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead CSB, which had eight hits.
Alex Smith picked up the win after giving up two runs on three hits with two strikeouts in the final 4.2 innings.
Kiela DeVlaeminck gave up two runs on five hits with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.
In the second game of the day, Mount Union got on the board early, scoring four runs on four hits to go up 4-0 after one inning. Mount Union added one run in the second and third before Saint Benedict (4-2) scored three runs on a three-run homer by Wennerstrand to make it 6-3. Mount Union made it 9-3 after a three-run fourth inning, but CSB got three back in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a two-run double from Deming. Mount Union added one run in the top of the seventh to end the scoring.
Wennerstrand went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and
Megan Toninato and
Claire Boatman each finished with two hits for CSB, which had 10 hits.
Cassie Meyer took the loss after giving up six runs on seven hits in three innings of work. Smith threw the final four innings and gave up four runs on seven hits.
CSB's JV team picked up a 12-11 win against Walsh Tuesday afternoon thanks to a five-run seventh inning.
Saint Benedict returns to action Wednesday against Monmouth and Immaculata.
