LEESBURG, Fla. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team beat SUNY Oneonta and Husson 6-2 Friday morning in Leesburg, Fla. Those wins marked the seventh of the trip and eighth of the season for CSB, and also marked head coach
Rachael Click's 100
th career victory.
Click, who is in her fifth season with Saint Benedict in 2017, is now 100-67 in her four-plus seasons with the team. She has guided the team to at least 20 wins in each of her first four seasons, including 28 wins in 2014. Saint Benedict has won 22 games each of the last two seasons.
CSB's first win of the day came against Oneonta.
Kate Deming led off with a solo homer to start the game, and Saint Benedict (8-2) added three more runs in the first: one off an RBI single by
Sara Wennerstrand and two when
Claire Boatman reached on an error and sent in a pair of runs.
Deming was hit by a pitch to start the second inning, stole second and came around to score on an error by Oneonta's catcher to make it 5-0. SUNY added a single run in the fourth and sixth innings, and
Emilie Antony added one more run for CSB in the bottom of the sixth when she singled, advanced on a throwing error by the shortstop and scored on an error by the catcher.
Megan Toninato, Antony, Wennerstrand and
Olivia Olson all had two hits for CSB, which finished with nine total hits.
Kiela DeVlaeminck threw the complete game to earn the win. She gave up two runs on 11 hits and struck out eight batters for the second straight game.
Husson took a 1-0 lead on CSB in the first inning to start the second game, but Saint Benedict scored a pair of runs in the third on an RBI double by Wennerstrand and an RBI single by Pfaff to go up 2-1. CSB made it 3-1 when
Hailey Monroe doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, but Husson got one back in the bottom of the inning.
CSB added an insurance run in the sixth when Monroe singled and scored on an RBI single by Deming, and two in the seventh thanks to an RBI fielder's choice by Boatman and an RBI single from Monroe.
Monroe finished 3-for-3 to lead CSB, which ahd 10 hits, and Deming also finished with a pair of hits.
Kadee Vesledahl earned the win after giving up two runs on one hit in the first three innings, and
Alex Smith earned the save after throwing the final four innings. She struck out seven batters and gave up just two hits.
CSB returns to action with a pair of games Saturday, including a matchup against Manhattanville ,which is currently ranked 16
th in Division III.
