Eklund scores in loss to Northland

ASHLAND, Wis. – Kylie Eklund scored her first goal of the season to keep the College of Saint Benedict hockey team close, but a late empty-net goal lifted Northland College to a 3-1 win over CSB Friday night in Ashland, Wis.

The game was tied through one period, despite several opportunities for both teams. Saint Benedict (0-8-1) had 13 shots on net in the first period to Northland's 11. The Lumberjills (4-6-1) got on the board in the eighth minute of the second period, but that was the only goal of the second.

Northland added another goal to its lead just over two minutes into the third period, but Saint Benedict got within one at the 11:29 mark of the third when Eklund scored on the power play off assists from Mollie Wise and Shelby Schneider.

CSB had an opportunity to tie the game late in the third when it went on the power play after the Lumberjills were called for hooking, and Saint Benedict had the 6-on-4 advantage after pulling goalie Kailee Medved, but CSB couldn't score, and Northland added an empty-net goal with eight seconds left to seal the win.

Saint Benedict outshot the Lumberjills 35-26, including 12-5 in the third period alone, but Maggie Cusey made 34 saves. Medved finished with 23 saves for CSB, including 11 in the first period to keep Northland off the board. Eklund finished with five shots on net, Schneider had six and Wise and Courtney Conlin each had four.

CSB and Northland take the ice again at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, in Ashland.
