ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team is looking to continue the success it found last weekend when it hosted the annual Quinlivan & Hughes Tip-Off Tournament. The 2-0 CSB basketball team continues the nonconference season Tuesday, Nov. 21, in Claire Lynch Hall when facing off against UW-Superior at 7 p.m.
About UW-Superior
The Yellowjackets head into the matchup 2-1, including a 66-55 win over Augsburg College. Superior is coming off a 2016-17 season where it went 23-5 overall, won the UMAC, and suffered a first-round loss in the NCAA tournament to St. Thomas. Hailey Kontny leads the team with 14.0 points per game and 9.3 rebounds per game. Justine Larson is averaging 13.0 points per game while shooting .640 from the field.
Last Year
Saint Benedict beat UW-Superior 54-53 last year on Nov. 15 in Superior, Wis. The Yellowjackets got out to a 26-21 first-half lead, but CSB came out strong in the second half in a victory that started a seven-game winning streak.
Chelsey Guetter led Saint Benedict with 11 points, and she also finished with eight rebounds. Eva Reinertsen scored 12 points for Superior.
Who to Watch
This season, all eyes will be on seniors
Chelsey Guetter,
Niki Fokken, and
Kate Banovetz after stellar seasons in their junior campaigns. Through two games, Guetter leads the team with 14.0 points per game followed by Fokken with 9.5 points per game. After leading CSB to the championship trophy of the Quinlivan & Hughes Tip-Off Tournament and Guetter was named tournament MVP and CSB Athlete of the Week.
The Storyline
The 2017-18 season marks the 32nd for head coach Mike Durban, and CSB is looking to beat its strong start from last season, when it opened with seven straight wins – the most since 2003-04. CSB plays seven of its first 10 games at home, where the team was almost unbeatable last season, posting an impressive 11-2 record. CSB looks to stay undefeated with a win over UW-Superior in its first of three games this week. CSB travels to Indianola, Iowa, for games against Buena Vista University on Friday and Simpson College on Saturday.
