CSB splits two in Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team split a pair of nonconference matches Saturday at the UW-Eau Claire Invite in Eau Claire, Wis.
 
CSB started its day with a sweep of UW-Stout – its seventh straight win and seventh straight sweep – and ended the afternoon with a 3-1 loss to Northwestern, which is currently ranked seventh in Division III. The loss marked the first since Sept. 20 for CSB, and snapped the team's winning streak.
 
In the first match of the day, CSB defeated the Blue Devels 25-21, 25-17 and 25-22. Madison Weiss finished with a team-high 10 kills and Liz Schultz and Lauren Mathews each added eight. Megan Pekarek had 36 assists and Haley LaValle led the team with 14 digs. Madison Weiss also had seven block assists and Schultz finished with 13 digs.
 
Saint Benedict (12-7) managed to sneak one set away from the Eagles, but Northwestern – which is now 23-3 – held on for the four-set win. The Eagles won the first set 25-17, but CSB came back and held on for a 27-25 win in a tight set two. Northwestern bounced back to take the next two sets 25-21 and 25-20 to end the match.
 
Mathews finished with 13 kills and Hunter Weiss added 11 for CSB, which had 48 total kills. Madison Weiss hit .429 against the Eagles with just one attack error. Pekarek had 45 assists and LaValle led the team with 19 digs. Madison Weiss finished with another seven block assists to her name and Bridget McDonald also added nine digs to the team's total.
 
CSB is on the road and returns to MIAC play Wednesday, Oct. 11, when it heads to Minneapolis to take on Augsburg. CSB is currently one game ahead of the Auggies in the MIAC standings at 5-1. Augsburg is 4-1 in MIAC play.
