ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict did everything in its power to pick up its first MIAC Tournament win since 2013 Tuesday afternoon.
CSB doubled up St. Kate's in shots on net, and goalie
Kendall Koenen had a solid day in net. But after neither team was able to pull away in double overtime the game went to a shootout, and the Wildcats came up big.
The score of Tuesday's MIAC Quarterfinal game in St. Joseph officially goes down is a 1-1, double overtime tie, but St. Kate's advances to Wednesday's MIAC Semifinals after winning the shootout 4-3.
CSB ends its season 9-3-4 overall. The team tied for fourth in the MIAC in the regular season, marking its best conference finish since 2014, and earned a spot in the MIAC Tournament after a two-year hiatus. The Wildcats take on top-seeded Augsburg Wednesday afternoon in Minneapolis.
Saint Benedict took control of the game early when
Megan Thompson scored her seventh goal of the season nine minutes in when
Madelyn Curtis put the ball in the zone and
Kelsey Tatarek got it to Thompson, who put it into the back of the net.
That lead held the remainder of the first half, but less than five minutes into the second half St. Kate's (7-6-4) tied the game when Kaitlin Machovec sent a shot past Koenen into the lower right corner of the net.
CSB had several big chances to win in regulation, but Wildcat goalie Jessica Perez-Adame had some big stops to keep the score tied. The Wildcats gained momentum in the 89
th minute when CSB received a red card and was forced to play short for the remainder of the game, but neither team was able to score in the final 10 minutes of regulation or 20 minutes of overtime. Both Tatarek and
Jenna Kleason had solid shots on net in the second overtime, but Perez-Adame saved both.
Maren Noble, Kleason and
Abby Welsch all made their shootout attempts to stay even with the Wildcats to start, but Perez-Adame made two saves to help her team hold on for the win.
Saint Benedict finished with 25 shots to St. Kate's 13, and held a 15-6 margin in shots on goal. Koenen wrapped up her sophomore season with five more saves and Perez-Adame made 14 saves to keep the Wildcats in the game. Thompson finished with four shots on net, Kleason had three and Tatarek finished with two.
