CSB pushes winning streak to five

MORRIS, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team has found its groove.

CSB picked up its fifth straight win Tuesday evening against a feisty Minnesota-Morris team. Saint Benedict won 3-0 – its fifth straight sweep – to pick up its 10th win of the season on the Cougars' home court in Morris, Minn.

Saint Benedict is now 10-6 overall, and is just two wins shy of matching its win total from the 2016 season.

Morris (17-5) didn't make it easy for Saint Benedict. CSB beat the Cougars by three points or less each game – 25-23, 25-23 and 25-22.

CSB led by four, 20-16, late in the first set against Morris, but the Cougars pushed back and got within one at 23-22 and 24-23, but a pair of blocks – one from Briana Schmiesing and Lauren Mathews and another by Megan Pekarek and Madison Weiss – ended the set.

The second set was much the same with CSB leading late, 23-18, but the Cougars got within three before a service error gave CSB match point.  The Cougars scored three more points, but Hunter Weiss ended the set with a kill.

Neither team led by more than two points in the third set, and it was tied at 22-22 but Pekarek had a pair of kills and a solo block to end the set and the match.

Hunter Weiss finished with 11 kills to lead CSB, which had 31 total kills. Schmiesing added eight kills for CSB. Pekarek finished with 25 assists, nine digs and four total blocks. Haley LaValle led the defense with 15 digs.

Marissa Ekness paced Morris with 15 kills. Layne Herrmann had 35 assists and Katie Reitsma finished with 11 digs.

Tuesday's match starts a busy week for CSB. The team hosts Bethel at 7 p.m. Friday in its homecoming match, then heads to Eau Claire, Wis., to take on UW-Stout and Northwestern at the UW-Eau Claire Invite Saturday.
