ST. CLOUD, Minn. – If close statistical games are your thing, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team provided in its 3-1 loss to Concordia-Wisconsin on Saturday at Dave Torrey Arena.
Though the score may not reflect the even-keeled game that CSB (0-2) put together, the stats show a vast improvement in the team's second showing of the season. CUW (1-1) barely edged CSB in shots on goal, a 30-27 margin, and CSB also kept faceoffs close at 24-22 CUW.
The visitors drew first blood when Jossa Danis executed a perfect lift of the puck over first-year goaltender
Kailee Medved's left shoulder to put CUW up 1-0 halfway through the first. CSB answered with just 93 seconds remaining in the period when
Kennedy Hageness tipped in
Riley Schneider's shot to bring the game to a 1-1 tie.
The second period started with the two teams getting equal opportunities to break the tie, but CUW was the only one to add to its score. Late in the second period, the visitors were able to get two goals in a span of 30 seconds when Natasha Wanless and Kristen Kennedy capitalized on a couple of bad shifts by CSB, giving Concordia a 3-1 lead after two periods.
Neither team converted on any goals in the final period, but both goaltenders would be called upon to make huge safes to help their team. Medved had timely sprawls across the ice in order to keep her team in the game, putting up a strong showing in her collegiate debut. She finished the day with 27 saves.
Both team's penalty killing units proved to be effective as CSB killed off all three of its penalties, a drastic improvement from their first game that saw three penalty kills fail to end without opponent goals.
CSB returns to action on Nov. 4 when its hosts its CSB hockey alumnae for an exhibition game. The team opens MIAC play on Nov. 9 when it hosts Hamline at the MAC for a 7 p.m. showdown.
